A wood bow is not just a piece of furniture that can sit and look pretty. The limbs of the bow are exposed to very high compression and tension loads within the woodgrain. During the bows’ construction, from the violent de-barking and rough shaping, to the careful revealing of the single growth ring on the back of the bow and then carving the riser and grip profiles... the delicate wood fibers of the bow have to be protected from the crushing hold that is typical of the shop vise or shave-horse. The StavePress holds very firmly but will not damage the woodgrain, even on irregularly shaped wood.
